Muflis (also called Lowball) is the Teen Patti variant where everything is turned upside down: the weakest hand in classic Teen Patti becomes the strongest, and a Trail becomes the worst hand at the table. It is one of the most popular variants at home games because it rewards players who can unlearn their classic instincts.
How Muflis Works
The deal, the boot, blind and seen betting, the side show and the final show all work exactly as in classic Teen Patti. Only one thing changes: the hand rankings are reversed.
Muflis Hand Rankings (Best to Worst)
| Rank in Muflis | Hand | Rank in classic |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (best) | High Card (no pair, not same suit, not in sequence) | 6 (worst) |
| 2 | Pair | 5 |
| 3 | Color (flush) | 4 |
| 4 | Sequence (run) | 3 |
| 5 | Pure Sequence | 2 |
| 6 (worst) | Trail (three of a kind) | 1 (best) |

Comparing Two High-Card Hands
When two players both hold High Card, the lower hand wins. Compare the highest card first; the player whose highest card is lower wins. If those tie, compare the second card, then the third.
- 5-3-2 (mixed suits) beats 6-3-2, because 5 is lower than 6.
- 7-4-2 beats 7-5-2, because the second card 4 is lower than 5.
The strongest Muflis hand is usually 5-3-2 of different suits. 3-2-A would be a sequence in most house rules, which is a weak hand in Muflis, so agree before the game whether the Ace counts high or low.
Example Round
Three players reach the show. Riya holds K-K-4 (a Pair), Aman holds 9-6-2 of mixed suits (High Card) and Neha holds 7-7-7 (a Trail). In classic Teen Patti Neha would win easily. In Muflis, Aman wins with High Card, Riya is second with a Pair, and Neha’s Trail is the worst hand.
Strategy Tips for Muflis
- Low, scattered cards are gold. Hands like 6-4-2 of mixed suits are strong.
- Fold “good-looking” hands. Pairs of Aces, flushes and runs feel strong from habit but are weak here.
- Watch suits. Three cards of one suit turn a nice low hand into a Color, which ranks below Pair.
- Blind play is riskier. Because most random hands are High Card, the gap between good and bad High Card hands decides many pots, so seeing your cards earlier is often worth it.
- Agree house rules first: Ace high or low, and whether A-2-3 counts as a sequence.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “Muflis” mean?
It comes from an Urdu/Hindi word meaning “poor” or “penniless”, a playful nod to the fact that the poorest hand wins.
Is a Trail ever good in Muflis?
No. In standard Muflis rules a Trail is the weakest possible hand.
Can Muflis be combined with jokers?
Yes. Some groups play “Joker Muflis”, where wild cards are used to build the lowest hand. See our Joker variant guide.
